Lucy will never stop mourning the loss of her little boy. Jesse, the man accused of drowning her son, insists the boy is alive.

“Your son is in danger,” he warns. “Only you can help me find little Sean.”

Lucy is waiting for the annulment papers from her loveless marriage. This attractive man soothes her sorrow and gives her hope. But Jesse comes from a family of high-class thieves. She must trust this stranger, but dare she let herself love him?

Fast paced adventure, intriguing mystery, forbidden romance.

 Scene from LITTLE LOST LORD

Steeling herself for who she might see, Lucy turned around. There stood Jesse Fitzhenry accompanied by Vivienne Chandler, the Duchess of Rockhurst.

As they walked toward her, she offered a “Good morning.”

At his trial for manslaughter, Mr. Fitzhenry had been acquitted because of Lucy’s testimony. What more did he want from her?

Clean shaved and fresh clothes, he looked so much better than he had last Friday. He was a striking fellow, tall in stature with strong arms and legs. And blue eyes, yes she’d noted the color before.

“Ma’am,” he said, “I think we can locate Malcolm Tate.”

We? She would be included in his search?

Mr. Tate had helped Lucy’s husband kidnap her son. He could tell her what really happened to Sean. If her son had drowned, did she want the details? If he is alive . . .? She would not taunt herself with misplaced hope.

“I see.” She dropped a curtsy. “Duchess.”

“Only you can help me,” Jesse said. “When Mr. Tate apprenticed with the coroner, he rented rooms from a farm family who live out on River Witham Lane. Your husband must have ordered Tate to crash the carriage on the path to the river access. After they faked your son’s drowning, they rode the carriage horse to the farmhouse where they changed your son into dry clothes. They tore his nightgown into scraps to float down the river for the searchers to find. At least that’s what I think happened.”

Lucy couldn’t bear to hear his words. But her soon to be former husband Gordon had lied about so many things. Even if she never saw Sean again, just to know he was alive would soothe her chronic sorrow.

“I don’t know what happened. I only have your words to go by.”

And Gordon’s lies.

Jesse’s voice raged with controlled anger. “I believe your child is alive. So do quite a few other people including the judge and the jury. I want to prove I did nothing wrong. More than that, I want to find your child. You must want that too.”

Would he touch her to make her look at him? No, he was too polite, but she did turn to him. “Through these horrible months, my friends and family have kept information from me. Now with the trial over, I’ve discovered what they kept hidden. The Fitzhenry family is notorious. You and your relatives engage in highway robbery, kidnapping for ransom, and who knows what else.”

At her remark, his eyes widened, and his teeth clenched. “My family has nothing to do with your missing child. What criminal gain would inspire me to search for Sean?”

“So you can blackmail my husband.” Before she listened to his proposal, she needed assurance she could trust him.

Jesse unclenched his teeth and made fists instead. “What appeals to me more is beating the blackguard to the ground and leaving him for dead.”

Full of tense energy, he paced a few steps and then came back to face her. “Judge Powell advised me to leave the area. People who disagree with the verdict may come after me. I’m risking my life to stay here. If I had anything to do with your boy’s death, would I still be here?”

Lucy had shunned all thoughts of what Sean might have suffered since she’d last seen him. That is, if he were alive. Tears dripped from her eyes. For fear of coming undone, she hadn’t allowed herself to cry since she learned Gordon had filed the death certificate. Jesse wouldn’t give up until he had learned all he could.

“The only person that matters is Sean,” Jesse said. “Not me, not you, just that sweet little boy.”

Lucy let his words flow through her.

Yes, only Sean matters. This man may help me find him. As much as it might hurt, I need to know if my boy is alive and if so, who takes care of him.

She would have to get used to this man, learn his gestures, understand his moods. Be on her guard against enjoying his company too much, but offer whatever help he needed.

“What do you want from me?”

The duchess said, “Because of my status, the farm couple will open their door to me. With you at my side, the wife should be sympathetic and willing to answer your questions.””

“If we find Malcolm Tate and he tells us where Sean might be, you’ll need me to identify my boy.” Her voice caught. She couldn’t speak. Would Sean remember her? Would she ever hold him in her arms again?

As Lucy rose, Jesse favored her with a wicked grin. Her family and his had that trait in common.
